Prehistoric Roots

Situated across both Cass and Crow Wing County, Gull Lake is a physical lake that’s also referred to as a greater region in Minnesota. It’s considered one of the largest lakes in the area and is undeniably popular among those looking to spend a vacation boating or recreating their way through a stay. Many visitors are surprised to learn that this highly developed and resort-inspired area has rich prehistoric roots. In fact, today’s Gull Lake Dam sits near and above several burial mounds that are believed to stem from the Woodland American Indian tribes that called these lands home. It’s estimated that this tribe inhabited the area between 800 B.C. all the way through 900 A.D. Today, these burial mounds have been added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Building Up Gull Lake

As time moved on, the logging potential of the Gull Lake area became abundantly clear to entrepreneurs from near and far. The lush terrain lent itself to successful logging enterprises that also worked to create temporary lake dams. Eventually, it was recognized that a physical dam construction would be beneficial. By 1912 the Gull Lake Dam was in place and functioning which opened up more economic possibilities for residents in the area.
